Fall gardening tips for western Oregon
| | 1. Make sure you pick up apples and pears from below the fruit trees. Otherwise coddling moth will be a problem next season ( it make take a few years to remove an infestation) |
| | 2. Start planting bulbs for the spring (If you wish then in patterns, draw out a map and mark the soil with tags) Gladiolus, tulips, narcissus, hyacinth, daffodils |
| | 3. To avoid mold, remove any grapes that are still on vines. |
| | 4. Remove Dahlia tubers for storage |
| | 5. Plant bareroots and shrubs |
| | 6. Good time to manually remove unwanted blackberry canes. The leaves are thinnning and the canes are easier to cut. If you remove the crowns, fewer blackberries will return. The job will be that much easier next year. If you're not opposed to herbicides, daubing the cut stems on the crown with glyphosate will kill or reduce regrowth next year. |
| | 7. Mulch cold sensitive plants |
| | 8. Clean up debris. Old leaves make good homes for snails, slugs and undesirable over-wintering larvae. |
