Endless Shaking - How to React During an Earthquake
HOW TO
Tags: Earhquake, Reaction to Earthquake, Preparing for Natural Disasters
You don't have to be like Tori from Saved By The Bell and carry a hardhat everywhere to be prepared for an earthquake. Here are some slightly better tips on how to react during an earthquake.
| 1. | Avoid unstable items and buildings. Most injuries during an earthquake occur because something loose falls onto a person. |
| 2. | Secure heavy items. Because falling objects propose the greatest danger it is important to secure them. Some examples of heavy items are pots and plants, televisions, and computers. |
| 3. | Fire Safety. Sometimes after an earthquake fires occur which can be very destructive. During an earthquake cut the power supply to your building, know where the emergency escapes are and have a fire extinguisher handy. |
| 4. | Prepare an escape kit. This kit should include basics such as a radio, flashlight, money, identification papers, food and water. |
| 5. | Think defensively. During an earthquake be sure and cover your vital areas such as your head and neck. |
| 6. | Know what the "earthquake position" is and assume it. In the earthquake position your knees and feet are tucked in you are close to the ground tucking your head in and covering with your hands. This position is most effective in protecting your vital organs. |
| 7. | Keep your children and pets safe. Hold them or be sure to have them in a safe are such as underneath a table. |
| 8. | Shoes are required. Have shoes available in case there is broken glass around. |
| 9. | Take precautions wherever you happen to be. |
| 10. | If you are in a crowded area, take cover where you are. |
| 11. | If you are outside, get into the open, away from buildings and power lines. If you are at the beach, move quickly to higher ground or several hundred yards inland. |
| 12. | If you are driving, stop if it is safe, but stay inside your car. Stay away from bridges, overpasses and tunnels. Move your car as far out of the normal traffic pattern as possible. If possible, avoid stopping under trees, light posts, power lines, or signs. |
| 13. | Try to remain calm. Wait for the earthquake to stop before moving from your spot. |
