Will there be another Triple Crown caliber horse this year? In the United States the Triple Crown is made up of: the Kentucky Derby, at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky; the Preakness Stakes, at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland; the Belmont Stakes, at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York. These are the only winners ever:
| | 1919 - Sir Barton - a chestnut thoroughbred colt, who, in 1919 became the first winner of the "triple crown" even before there was such a term |
| | 1930 - Gallant Fox - Holder of a single-season earnings record that was not surpassed for 16 years. |
| | 1935 - Omaha - Unexpected triple crown winner who won only once in 9 starts as a junior. |
| | 1937 - War Admiral - known to fans as the Mighty Atom, or simply The Admiral, was the best of Man O' War's sons. Was later beaten by famed Seabiscuit. |
| | 1941 - Whirlaway - a chestnut colt who was horse of the year two times. |
| | 1943 - Count Fleet - Owned by the Hertz family of rental car fame, the long-legged Count Fleet was so good at age two that he was assigned 132 pounds in The Jockey Club's year-end handicap ranking of American two-year-olds, the largest impost ever assigned there. |
| | 1946 - Assault - Unlikely hero, born on a cattle farm, injured as a junior (stepped on a spike which deformed his hoof), known as the "Club Footed Comet". |
| | 1948 - Citation - the 8th triple crown winner, it would be 25 years until the 9th. He was the first equine millionaire in 1951. |
| | 1973 - Secretariat - affectionately nicknamed "Big Red", considered by many to be the greatest horse of all time. His Kentucky Derby time is still the record, but even more impressive is something almost unheard of -- his "negative splitting". He ran each quarter-mile segment FASTER than the one before it. |
| | 1977 - Seattle Slew - the only "undefeated" triple crown winner. |
| | 1978 - Affirmed - Affirmed and Alydar's stretch duel in the Belmont was one of the greatest in racing history. |
