The spider are really reclusive, coming out mostly at night, hiding in places rarely disturbed by humans. It is even hard to provoke them. They want to be left alone. But sometimes when brushed up against, sat upon, or crushed, they will bite. Here are some tips for controlling the brown recluse population in your home:

  •
  • Store clothes and shoes in sealed plastic bags or storage bins rather than cardboard boxes. They like to crawl into the boxes' crevices.
  •
  • Don't use bedspreads that touch or come close to the floor.
  •
  • Don't store old clothing in sheds, barns and attics.
  •
  • Move beds away from walls or curtains and remove bed skirts from box springs.
  •
  • Don't use bedspreads that touch or come close to the floor.
  •
  • Don't store boxes under the bed.
  •
  • Keep places spiders may hide well lit. Consider keeping closet doors open to let light in.
  •
  • Use glue traps along walls and under furniture, behind toilets, under sinks and bathtubs, in closets, on shelves, near stored items in garages and attics, and near openings of light fixtures and vents in attics. The traps can show you where the spiders like to hide and keep down the population in your home.
  •
  • Move firewood away from the home, elevate it off the ground and cover it with plastic.
  •
  • Keep all vegetation and mulch at least 18 inches from the foundation of your home.
  •
  • Trim branches trees and shrubs away from the home to prevent spiders from using them as a path into the home.
  •
  • Seal all cracks and crevices where spiders may possibly enter the home, including areas where staircases or overhangs meet the wall, and cracks where pipes, cables and wires enter the structure.
  •
  • Apply insecticide to entry points, then seal them.
