How To Intonate an Electric Guitar
HOW TO
Tags: intonation, pitch, guitar, setup, electric, intonate
A guide on how to set the intonation of your guitar so all the frets up and down the fretboard are closer to the desired pitch.
| 1. | Start by installing new strings. Tune them to pitch and then stretch them. Allow them to stretch overnight before setting intonation. |
| 2. | To set intonation, first tune the open string using a tuner accurate to one hundredth of a cent. |
| 3. | Then fret the twelfth fret of that string. |
| 4. | If the fretted twelfth fret note is flat, then you need to set the saddle closer to the pickups (towards the neck). Do this using a screwdriver to adjust the screws at the bridge. |
| 5. | If the twelfth fret note is sharp, then you need to adjust the saddle farther away from the neck. |
| 6. | Make small turns (1/8 of a turn of the screwdriver at a time). Retune the open string and compare the twelfth fret note again. |
| 7. | Repeat adjustments for all strings until all twelfth fret notes are in tune with the open notes. |
| 8. | Alternatively, you can compare the twelfth fret notes to the twelfth fret harmonic instead of the open string. |
