OK - I didn't make individual lists for hotels, dining, entertainment, shopping, etc. for Osgood because the lists would just be too short! Osgood is very small town in southeastern Indiana (population 1669 in the 2000 census), but there are some things worth visiting if you're passing through! The town was named after Mr. A.L. Osgood, a chief engineer for the Ohio and Mississippi Railroad who was in charge of the surveying crew. In In 1854, the Ohio and Mississippi Railroad Company completed the railroad line through Ripley County. In George W. Cochran bought the land from Henry Papet in 1856 and began laying out a town between Napoleon and Versailles. A road was built from oak boards between the towns. The initial town began on the south side of the railroad and in 1878 Osgood became an incorporated town.
| | Dining: The Red Barn is good for pizza, The Osgood Grub Co. has good steaks, a great lunch buffet for small town, weekend evening buffets are great (usually seafood one night!). Don't for DiGiovanni's - a quaint little coffee shop with excellent cappuccinos and a fairly diversified menu. Don't forget the Whistle Stop Cafe! |
| | Osgood Museum - interesting small museum, quite new |
| | Damm Theatre - currently being renovated. This was the big attraction back in the "old days" and sat vacant for many years. The theatre was opened October 24, 1914. Local talent was provided on Tuesday nights and the latest movies were shown on Thursday and Saturday for 5 or 10 cents. Later it hosted vaudeville acts as well, and the 2nd floor became a dance hall. It is my understanding that this will be a community theater when it re-opens. The building was totally gutted and after renovations were begun it caught on fire. I guess it was better it happened when it did rather than when renovations were well underway! There's a neat website about the Damm Theatre at http://www.in.gov/dnr/historic/tcs_damm.html |
| | Shopping: Lots of shopping for such a small town. You'll be able to see all the stores from the main street in town (Buckeye Street). There's a neat little Hallmark store that sells Lefton glass, Hallmark goods, Enesco, etc. as well as some nice antiques. There is a big antique store with many booths, several variety stores selling both old & new items, Treasure Chest jewelry Shop, and a couple of stores selling clothing, video games & movies. |
| | Lodging: Osgood hosts a couple of B&B's (Bed & Breakfast). Newman Vollmar House Bed and Breakfast on Buckeye St. and Victorian Garden Bed and Breakfast on Walnut St. Both are beautiful old Victorian era homes. |
| | There are 3 gas stations in Osgood, and 1 grocery store. You won't find anything the size of a WalMart here or any fast food restaurants either. Around here - it's life the way it used to be! |
