Detroit Metro - What it used to be
IN THE PAST
Tags: city, detroit, motor city, automotive, suburban, recession, recreation
It's a shame what's going on now in Detroit, the local economy has been in steep decline for a few years now. It wasn't all that long ago that it was a very cool place to live and the automotive industry a very cool place to work. Now that GM and the other auto makers are cutting staff to the bone, it's a vastly different place. I miss the metro for what it was and hope that life improves there asap.
| | Good jobs - Working for any of the big 3 in any technical capacity was profitable and rewarding. Most all engineering and manufacturing companies were tied into the auto industry so if you had experience in one auto related area you might get a job in another company if you didn't like the place that you were at. It would give a certain securtiy by just the vast number of jobs there. |
| | Great nightlife - If you liked the bars and clubs there were a lot of them to choose. It was the 90s when I was there and masses of people were working like crazy during the week and partying down on the weekends. It's true that California has some great looking women there but there were scads of great looking women out looking for fun. |
| | A large variety of restaurants - Fast food, specialty foods, sit down fancy restaurants or quick diner type places were spread all over the metro. Have a taste for a particular nation's foods, you'd find a good one somewhere in the metro. |
| | Affordable places to live - While there are surely high dollar homes for sale in the 90s, there were also some very affordable places to buy or apartments available for rent. Looking for a fixer upper? You'd have a lot to choose from. A nice condo? Plenty of them as well. Something high end? Well, there are surely a lot of rich folks living there so there were plenty of executive type homes as well. |
| | Enjoyable recreation parks - For all the complaints about how crowded the metro was it was not nearly as bad as other cities, cough-Houston-cough. If you were looking for a place to camp or get away many places were an hour away or less. Close enough to be enjoyable while still far enough away to escape the city atmosphere. |
| | Always something going on - Boats shows, car shows, concerts, markets of all kinds and interesting things to do were happening every weekend. For just a couple of bucks you could spend the day looking through stuffs that you might not have the chance to see before |
