Fire prevention and safety in the home are very important. Follow this advice to help keep you and your family safe from from fires:
| | Install a smoke alarm on every level of your home and test it monthly. |
| | Keep fire extinguishers on hand, and make sure your family knows how to use them. Know fire prevention rules. |
| | Practice an escape plan from every room in the house once a month. |
| | Practice feeling your way out of the house in the dark or with your eyes closed. |
| | Keep matches and lighters locked up and away from children. Teach your children that fire is a tool, not a toy and not to hide from firefighters. |
| | Designate a meeting place outside so that no one will be hurt looking for someone who is already safe. |
| | Never overload circuits or extension cords. |
| | Overheating, unusual smells, shorts and sparks are all warning signs that appliances need to be shut off, then replaced or repaired. |
| | Keep anything combustible at least three feet away from portable heaters. |
| | Fire sprinklers are affordable and increase your chances of surviving a fire. |
