Do you want to write a good science fiction story? Read on for some tips!
| | Begin with some scientific element of the story. You may need to research on the web by checking out a site like Scientific American. You want to have a scientific premise that fits within the framework of our universe's physical laws, or else you'll be writing a fantasy story. |
| | Start out by introducing a main character, a setting, and the scientific premise of the story. |
| | Start writing the story and elaborate on the questions "who" (your main and supporting characters), "where" and "when" (setting). |
| | Use believable dialog and avoid "said bookisms." I.e., don't say, "That's it, I've had it," he snarled. Instead, just say, "That's it, I've had it," he said. The word "said" is used so often in fiction that it's practically invisible to readers, so they just pick up on the dialog itself. |
| | Include a central conflict; man vs nature, man vs man, man vs society, or man vs himself. |
| | resolve the conflict. |
| | read books |
| | read and edit your story 'til you find it satisfying. never hesitate to edit |
| | practice writing not just science fiction |
| | be consistent with your characters e.g. their attitudes, mannerisms throughout the story |
| | ask comments from friends, family to improve |
