Best Cheap Fun in NYC
BESTS
Tags: NYC, cheap fun, culture
NYC can be the one of the greatest cities for cheap fun. You just have to know where to look...
| | South Street Seaport. Like many of NYC's touristy attractions, the South Street Seaport often features free side walk performance, discount street vendors and good food. What makes this attraction excellent is that is is surrounded by water and birds everywhere. So even if you don't want to spend any money, it's well worth the visit. | | | Chinatown (Canal Street). Chinatown is one of NYCs cultural gems! And the prices are amazing. Start with a light dim sum at one of numerous restaurants. But be sure to save room for Chinese sweets! There are tons of vendors everywhere, and the prices for merchandise is surprisingly cheap. Area stores often boast sales! Also be sure to check out some cultural attractions. Taking a Chinese speaker along will make things much easier (and cheaper) but it's not necessary. Beware of the fake designer bags though. | | | Bronx Zoo. The Bronx Zoo largest metropolitan zoo in the United States, comprising 265 acres (1.07 km²) of parklands and naturalistic habitats, through which the Bronx River flows. On Wednesdays, admission is free and excessive crowded an added bonus. Just be smart and bring your own food, as meals and snacks can run upwards of the $15 admission fee. The zoo is opened every day of the year, though it is most spectacular during its light show. | | | MTA All-Day Pass. One of the best things you can do in NYC is simply explore! If you are there for a week, then check out the museums and attractions. But a day's trip is best for what I call a "test run." The essence of NYC is hard to capture, especially from television portrayals. With one of the most extensive subways in the world, why not catch a glimpse for yourself. Some of the key venues are Central Park, Times Square, Herald Square, Union Square and Harlem. There is food and shops everywhere, but you'll find that each neighborhood has its own unique culture, some of which are evident in the food, people and art. | | | Cheap Broadway. The days of expensive, exclusive theater are gone, thanks to the Tkts Booth that provides patrons with discounted tickets to Broadway and Off-Broadway productions for a fraction of the cost (usually 30-50% discount.) The only catch is that you have to buy tickets the day of, and sometimes lines are long. The good news is that the shows are current and did I mention, cheap! |
