5 Best Ways to Beat Writers (or Bloggers) Block   Add to wiki
FAVORITES Wiki List

It's quite normal for writers and bloggers to go through periods when they simply can't think of anything to write about. While this can be depressing there are simple ways to motivate and inspire oneself, here are some of my favourites.

  •
  • Perform mundane tasks: It's surprising how often great ideas pop into my head when I'm standing at the sink washing the dishes. Mundane tasks such as housework occupy your hands, but leave your mind free to concentrate on more important things such as the ending for your novel.
  •
  • People watching: Getting out and about is a good idea anyway, but an hour spent in a local coffee shop can pay dividends. Take an interest in the people around you, what are they doing? How do they interact? What else could be going on their lives? Obviously, this tip comes the proviso that you remain discreet, you don't want people to think you are an oddball.
  •
  • Television and newspapers: Spend some time reading the papers, or watching television, especially the news. News stories can be a great source of inspiration for writers and bloggers alike. Local papers and news programmes are especially useful because they tend to cover a lot of human interest stories.
  •
  • Writing prompts: Writing prompts are snippets of ideas which can be used to spark much larger projects. They don't work for everyone, but if you think you need some outside help, there are numerous websites and newsletters which offer free prompts. A quick search of your favourite search engine should turn up dozens, simply browse through until you find something that 'clicks'.
  •
  • Revisit old stories or posts: Go back and reread some of your old work. Take characters from pre-existing stories and place them in a new location or scenario, or use the same scenario and location but new characters. Take a look at old posts and ask yourself 'do I still believe this now', or look for ways to provide an update, or add further information about topics not fully covered in the original.
