Top 5 Underrated Hockey Skills
BESTS
Tags: Hockey, Skills, Underrated, Top 5
Everyone knows that a hard shot, checking, stickhandling, and speed are crucial hockey skills. This is a summary of the top five underappreciated hockey (roller or ice) skills that will help your team win games.
| 1. | Passing: This is the most underrated skill in hockey. A good passer will create offense by getting your goal scorers the puck cleanly and help you defensively by allowing for smooth clears and neutral zone transitions. All offense starts with a good pass and many scoring chances are missed because of bad ones. It's a skill few casual hockey players have or care to practice. |
| 2. | Stick Lifting: Get your opponents stick off the ice (surface). This is especially important when they're in front of the net. If they don't have their stick down when the puck gets there they can't score on you. |
| 3. | The Boards Pass: I did this in my game last sunday. The defenseman I beat almost had a heart attack from shock. When a opposing player comes as you instead of trying to deak them simply bounce the puck up the boards and skate around them. More often than not you'll catch them flat footed or draw a penalty. |
| 4. | Clearing the Puck: Sometimes the best play is the easiest. When in doubt get the puck out. The inability or unwillingness to clear your defensive zone leads to more goals against that just about anything else. |
| 5. | Shot Blocking: Yes, it hurts but if you're competitive like I am it can really help a tired goaltender and even lead to scoring chances. Most players in casual leagues are unwilling to shoot at a shot blocker anyway. They will generally just miss you and the net. |
