Best Museums in Washington D.C.
BESTS User Created List

Tags: museums, DC, Washington DC, tourism, capitol

Washington D.C. is home to dozens of museums, a lot of them free. If you ever visit the nation's capitol, you should consider...

  •
  • The Newsuem: An interactive museum dedicated to the history of news and historical events. It has so many hands-on activities that children will love it. The cost is $20 for adults and $13 for children (kids under 6 are admitted for free)
  •
  • The National Air and Space Museum: Part of the Smithsonian complex, the Air and Space Museum covers the history of manned flight. It houses authentic planes dating back from some of the earliest flight attempts all the way to the space age. It's educational but interesting enough to keep the kids entertained for hours. Best of all, it's free!
  •
  • The Smithsonian Natural History Museum: Another museum in the Smithsonian complex, this museum contains fossils, replicas of ancient animals, astronomy, a giant squid and a gem exhibit which includes the famous Hope Diamond. Again, admission is free.
  •
  • The Spy Museum: An interactive look at the history of espionage. You can create your own spy identity and complete missions throughout the exhibits. Also, the Apache code talkers, WWII code machines, cars that smuggled citizens across the Berlin Wall to freedom and other exhibits including the tools of the espionage trade. Tickets are $18 for adults and $15 for children.
  •
  • Memorials of Washington D.C
  •
  • While not technically museums, D.C. is home to many memorials honoring everyone from Washington to FDR to Vietnam veterans. Many are not very interesting for children, but deeply impressive nonetheless. If you can only see a few, visit the Lincoln Memorial, the Vietnam Memorial, and the WWII Memorial. All are free to visit and very touching. You can no longer walk to the top of the Washington Monument, so be warned that all you will see is the obelisk- impressive, but not for a very long time.
