Maryland may be known for crabs, but there are many other wonderful reasons to visit the Free State (also known as the Old Line State). Make sure to visit the following:

  •
  • Artscape: Billed as the largest art festival with free admission. Why is it awesome? Well, it includes free music, trippy art, an artist market, and family activities. There are plenty of quirky artists and fans to meet. Artscape is held every year.
  •
  • Cove Point Light House: Charles County, in southern Maryland is home to many lighthouses. The Cove Point lighthouse is unique in that it is shaped like a giant red drum. It once stood in the middle of the Chesapeake bay, but was moved a while back. It is still a navigational aid, but you can get a tour of the keeper's quarters and hear about the peg-leg keeper who managed to climb an almost vertical ladder to get to the light, even in gale force winds.
  •
  • Ellicott City: a historical city with lots of shops, antique galleries, and arty stores to explore. The B and O train used to run through the city. One store features animatronic teddy bears blowing bubbles on the roof of the store. Bakeries, brew pubs and other little restaurants are easy find and have something for even the most discerning palate. There's even a walking tour of the historic places in the city.
  •
  • Cylburn Arboretum in Baltimore: A large nature center which covers more than 200 acres of land. Hike along nature trails, take a stroll through the flower gardens, and relax on the many benches tucked away throughout the lush paradise.
  •
  • Historic Annapolis: On the Chesapeake Bay, Annapolis is the capitol of Maryland and home to West Point Naval Academy. Many historic sites are preserved and there are plenty of shops and dining choices around. There are also tours available for those interested in the historical sites.
  •
  • Saint Mary's City Maryland: The original capitol of Maryland, Saint Mary's City was established as one of the first settlements for both Catholics and Protestants. It also has the distinction of electing the first black government representative. Unlike Jamestown, Saint Mary's City has excavated the ruins and built the historic replicas on top of the excavation sites. Historical tours are offered and there are plenty of interpreters to help you through. You can also check out a replica of thel boat that the Saint Mary's settlers arrived in. A Native American village has also been recreated.
  •
  • Wine in the Woods: Held in Howard County at Symphony Woods, Wine in the Woods has live music, wine from around the country as well as local wine, and gourmet food from local restaurants. It is held every year in May.
