Eight Tips for Caregivers Working with State Custody Children in a Treatment Facility
TIPS
Tags: children, caregivers, state-custody, treatment
I have seen many mistakes in working with hospitalized state-custody children, and I have learned a lot of lessons. Here are a few basic tips for those working or planning to work in a treatment center for children.
| | Don't take it personally. Whatever might be thrown your way, don't take the words and actions of the children to heart. |
| | Don't be afraid to ask your superiors questions, even if the question seems stupid. You can't just rely on common sense. |
| | Don't yell! There are very few times when raising your voice will help the situation. Remember, these children rely on comfort and stability. |
| | Don't release any personal information about yourself. This includes last name, address, phone number, and even the make and year of your car. You don't want this to become a bigger issue. |
| | Relax. These kids pick up on tension, and a stressed out staff can really set some children off. |
| | Choose your words wisely. When you say no, mean it. |
| | Do not take out frustrations, worries, or anger on any of the children, even verbally. Some days can be stressful, but you can not let that affect your work. You are there to aid in the treatment of these children. |
| | Leave work at work and home at home. Do not carry personal burdens with you to work, and don't carry occupational troubles or information home. Confidentiality is a top priority. |
