| | Spent summers as a child at Laurel Lake near Jacksonville Vermont, where he played golf on 9 hole course, and once shot a 29 |
| | At Laurel Lake he learned to love swimming and all sorts of lake activities … and to hate gardening. |
| | He played church league basketball in high school and wore a belt on his wool shorts. |
| | He graduated with honors from Dartmouth College in 1941 |
| | After college he taught troubled youths from New York City at Greer School near Boston |
| | He fell in love with Pauline Anna Riley, a Cornell University graduate and fellow teacher at Greer School |
| | On his first visit to Nut Ridge in the summer of 1942, Sam and Pauline arrived at the Riley family white cottage after dark and soon went to sleep with him on the lakeside sleeping porch. |
| | A train came through on what is now the beach, and since no one had informed him of the train tracks, he came close to fleeing the cottage |
| | He was drafted on July 31, 1942 |
| | They were married on February 18, 1943 in Ithaca with Harris Bonaparte Dates as the Best Man. |
| | Harris Dates was the original owner / builder of the beloved red cottage |
| | He departed the United States on December 28, 1943 to serve in the Army Air Corp stationed in England |
| | A son, Samuel Henry Pratt, was born on March 21, 1944 |

| | He was a member of Saint Peter’s Episcopal Church and was involved in numerous Civic and University activities. |
