This can sound like a lofty goal, especially for those of us who have a long commute to work everyday, but it is entirely possible for most of us to at least reduce our car’s impact on the environment by making a few adjustments in our daily routines. |
| | Tip #1: Drive a little less! If you must drive to work everyday and you are unable to carpool, you should attempt to lessen your car use outside of your daily commute by utilizing your local transit system, biking or carpooling. Utilizing different forms of transportation can be frustrating at first, but there are many benefits beyond just reducing your greenhouse gas emissions. You can use these new forms of transportation occasionally and you’ll be able to save money and get into better shape. |
| | Tip #2: Be a better driver. And by this I mean drive the speed limit, or perhaps a little below it. Fuel efficiency is best when you are traveling at 60 miles per hour or less. Also, try to maintain a constant speed. Avoid starting, stopping and jerking around as must as possible. It’s a waste of gas and it’s often dangerous. Try to keep your engine speed between 1,200-3,000 RMPs and speed up slowly. Utilizing your cruise control is a great way to do this with minimal effort. |
| | Tip #3: Take good care of your car. You should be following the recommendations listed in your car manual. Change your oil when you are supposed to and do all of the upkeep that you’ve been avoiding. It’s good for the environment and you’re car will need less repairs. Also, make sure that your tires are inflated correctly. If they aren’t inflated enough, your gas mileage will suffer greatly. |
| | These tips are just a start to living and driving green. You should ultimately aspire to go green in other areas of your life as well. I know it doesn’t sound ideal to most, but it could be great if you gave it a chance. Reassess your travel needs and look for ways to meet them without over using your car. Maybe you can telecommute certain days of the week or just drive part of the way and catch the bus. Think outside of the box and you might be surprised at how easy it is. And besides, it’s a great way to keep your car looking great! |
