As of 2002, there is no standard treatment for pica. Currently, the most effective strategies are based on behavior modification, but even these treatments have achieved limited success.
| | Identified nutritional deficiencies and other problems, such as lead toxicity, should be addressed medically. |
| | Treatment emphasizes psychosocial, environmental, and family guidance approaches. |
| | Other successful treatments have been mild aversion therapy followed by positive reinforcement. |
| | Medications may be helpful in reducing the abnormal eating behavior, if pica occurs in the course of a developmental disorder, such as mental retardation, or pervasive developmental disorder. |
