Loud booms, flashes of light, and hard hitting rain. A thunderstorm can be frighting and damaging here is how you can protect yourself during this natural phenomenon.

1. Know suitable shelter or place that you will be safe. Being inside a large building is a great way to minimize lightning danger. Smaller structures such as public restrooms are usually not as stable. If you are in a car and there is no shelter available stay put. The car will absorb the lightning if you are struck.
2. Always remember that you can't control the weather. So do what your troop leader taught you and be prepared for any and everything. Always have a plan in case of inclement weather.
3. Look up! Normally if a storm is moving in dark or overcast clouds will begin to fill the sky. When these start to appear you need to be sure that you will be able to get to a safe place.
4. Don't hesitate. Protect yourself as soon a storm begins. Go to the shelter or another safe area. When the storm is at its worst you want to be protected not caught out in the rain.
5. Worst case scenario. If you are unable to seek shelter protect yourself at your location. Avoid wide open spaces and higher elevated areas.
6. Take “last-resort?? measures if you’re stuck in a dangerous place. If you’re in a group of people, spread out so there are several body lengths between each of you. Assume the lightning crouch: squat down with your feet together, your head tucked to your chest or between your knees, and your hands covering your ears or flat against your knees. This is a difficult position to hold and it by no means guarantees your safety. However, by making it easier for a lightning strike to flow over your body rather than through vital organs, you may be able to sustain a smaller injury from it.
7. Be aware of the warning signs. If lightning is about to strike near you your hair may stand up on your arms or light metal objects may vibrate.
8. If you or someone around you is struck by lightning be sure and get them immediate medical attention. Call 911 or ask if anyone is qualified to help the person at hand. Most important, do not panic remember you can survive being struck by lightning.
