How to Get Rid of Poison Ivy Plants
HOW TO
Tags: Poison Ivy, Removing Posion Ivy Plants, Garden Pests, Unwanted Plants
Poison ivy gives most people a terrible itching rash so if you have it near your home you probably should get rid of it. It's a tough perennial so it won't die in the winter, and if you try to pull it up you'll get the rash. The only way to get rid of the plant is to use a very strong herbicide.
| 1. | Recognize poison ivy: it's a vine with groups of 3 pointy leaves, the middle leaf has a longer stem than the side 2. It sends runners under the ground and can climb up into trees. It can grow just about anywhere. |
| 2. | Mix Roundup Concentrate herbicide with water, 3 times normal strength. (Don't use ready-mixed Roundup, it's not strong enough for poison ivy.) Put it in a sprayer, like an empty window cleaner sprayer. Read instructions on the Roundup label. Label the sprayer and keep it for only this purpose, in a safe place. |
| 3. | On a day that is not windy or about to rain, spray to thoroughly coat all poison ivy leaves with the solution. Try not to get solution on the plants you like, they will die. Plants take the herbicide in through their leaves, then the plant dies. |
| 4. | The poison ivy should get yellow and die in a couple of weeks. |
| 5. | Check the area several times a year for several years, because where there's poison ivy there's probably more you haven't seen yet. Poison ivy is very persistent. |
