How to Mime a Believable Wall
HOW TO
Tags: Mime, Acting, Actor, Artist, Silent Art
One of the most famous acts done by mimes is miming a believable wall. Here is how you can master this silent art.
| 1. | Select a wall or similarly flat vertical object. Start with a semi-closed fist and slowly place your hands on it one at a time then remove them. Repeat this sequence while training your mind on how the wall feels, what muscles are moving, how your hands feel in motion, the placement of your arms, how far the wall is from your body. |
| 2. | Repeat the first exercise but this time without the wall. Don't be satisfied with "close enough", although it will still amaze some, you want to be able to fool the skeptics. |
| 3. | Practice in front of a mirror. If it is not perfect, just repeat step #1 and 2 again...Be picky! |
| 4. | Act with your eyes! Show a little surprise (open the peepers a bit) when you feel this invisible wall...it is the second reinforcer to the audience. Practice looking at the "wall surface" instead of through it, there is a noticeable difference to the audience. |
| 5. | Practice keeping your hands suspended in midair and motionless as you move your body. This also adds tremendously to the effect. |
| 6. | Try to get the hang of horizontal planes (invisible piano keyboards, boxes, counter-tops and low ceilings) spheres(play ball) and ropes (ladders and stairs are for later!). |
| 7. | Find a friendly but objective audience to critique you. Remember, "good enough" is not your goal. When you feel ready, look for the opportunity to perform. |
