Tags: dogs, health, history, breeds, doberman pinscher
Dobermans are a mix of several different breeds. They were bred in the 1860's by a tax collecter, Louis Dobermann, who traveled to many crime-infested towns and wanted a breed of watchdog that could handle any situation that might arise. Here are some facts about this relatively young breed. What do you know?
| | Males are 26-28 in. tall and females are 24-26 in. tall |
| | Average weight is 66-68 ibs. |
| | Live about 13 years |
| | Have black coats with rust and markings of red |
| | Short and smooth hair needing minimal grooming |
| | Intelligent and form close bonds with their families |
| | Require firm and consistent training to cope with their stubbornness |
| | Make excellent watchdogs and are sometimes used in law enforcement |
| | Not the best breed to get if you have children. They enjoy playing with and protecting children, but some of the yelling and abrupt movements that children make can be interpreted as a threat by a Doberman. |
| | Need a good amount of exercise, but not in the cold |
| | Medical concerns include: cervical spondylitis (wobbler syndrome), Von Willebrands disease (inherited blood disorder), middle-age obesity, bloat, hip dysplasia, hypothyroidism, and congenital heart disorders |
