Bred to protect estates and flocks from poachers (60% Mastiff, 40% Bulldog)

Arose for a practical purpose

Dark coat and quiet demeanor would surprise poachers and the dog could pin them without biting or hurting them

Also used as a sentry or guard dog and in the army and police

Recognized by the English Kennel Club in 1924

Recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1933

Used to guard DeBeer diamond mines in South Africa and John D. Rockefeller's New York estate
