How to Do a Flare, Windmill, or 2 Step in Breakdancing
HOW TO
Tags: Flare, Windmill, Breakdancing, Breakin', Dancing
If you have just finished watching the movie Breakin' maybe you're feeling like bustin' a move. Here is how you can do a flare in breakdancing.
| 1. | Build shoulder, front, back, front, arm, finger, toe, abdominal, and general upper body strength. Raw strength is what you need to do flares. Look up training methods for building core strength if you need more information. | | 2. | Sit on your butt, get your legs spread in the air, and then cycle in a 360 motion, like gymnasts would do on a pommel horse. Keep your hands in a fixed spot but pick them up to allow your legs to swing through. | | 3. | Practice windmills. It's all about leverage. For a beginner, start on your butt. Swing your left leg to the right and then in a large circle back towards the left. Keep pulling with this leg, while throwing your right leg to the left. While you're doing this, you start sucking your left leg under your body. Now you will be facing the ground and you should instinctively be on your hands. Push against the ground with your hands to fight gravity and keep your windmill going. Repeat, and repeat, etc. | | 4. | Refine your 2-step. A 2-step is a very vague move that everyone does differently. Basically it involves one starting in a crab position, and in one way shape or form performing 2 dance moves to return to the initial position, such as a step, then a coffee grinder (leg swipe). Start doing this on grass or on mats. Most people jump forward, but you need to jump up, tuck your knees into your stomach and swing forward. |
