Treatments for Shingles (Herpes Zoster)

| | There is no cure for shingles. |
| | Severity and duration of an attack of shingles can be significantly reduced if you are treated immediately with antiviral drugs. |
| | Antiviral drugs may also help stave off the painful after-effects. |
| | Other treatments include painkillers, steroids, antidepressants and anti-seizure medicine. |
| | See your doctor as soon as possible, because antiviral medication is effective only if given early. |
| | Do not scratch. This may increase the risk of bacterial infection and scarring. Antihistamines can relieve the itching. |
| | Apply cool tap-water compresses to weeping blisters for 20 minutes several times a day to soothe and help dry the blisters |
| | Keep the area clean with mild soap and water. |
| | Application of petroleum jelly can aid in healing. |
