Art theft is not only the theft from the owner but also the theft of the ability for everyone to see the beautiful art. The FBI is on the case and below are the top ten art crimes!

  • Iraqi Looted and Stolen Artifacts March-April 2003 Iraqi cultural institutions and archaeological sites were looted. A number have been returned, but between 7,000-10,000 remain missing.

  • Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum Theft March 1990 Robbed by two unknown men who removed works of art whose value has been estimated as high as $300 million.
  •  
  • Theft of Caravaggio's "Nativity with San Lorenzo and San Francesco" October 1969 Two thieves entered the Oratory of San Lorenzo, Palermo, Italy and removed the Caravaggio Nativity from its frame. Experts estimate its value at $20 million.

  • Theft of the Davidoff-Morini Stradivarius October 1995 A $3 million 1727 Stradivarius violin was stolen from the apartment of Erica Morini, a noted concert violinist.

  • The Van Gogh Museum Robbery December 2002 Two thieves broke in through the roof and in just a few minutes stole 2 paintings: View of the Sea at Scheveningen and Congregation Leaving the Reformed Church in Nuenen, valued at $30 million. December 2003, men convicted but art not recovered.

  • Theft of Cezanne's "View of Auvers-sur-Oise" December 31, 1999 During the fireworks for the celebration of the millennium, a thief broke into the Ashmolean Museum to steal Cezanne’s landscape painting valued at £3 million.

  • Theft of Da Vinci's "Madonna of the Yarnwinder" August 2003 Two men taking a public tour of Drumlanrig Castle overpowered a tour guide and stole the $65 million painting.
  •  
  • Theft of the Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney Murals, Panels 3-A and 3-B July 2002 Two $4 million oil paintings by Maxfield Parrish were stolen during a gallery burglary in West Hollywood. The paintings were cut from their frames during the theft.
  •  
  • Theft from the Museu Chacara do Céu February 2006 Four works of art and other objects were stolen from the Museu Chacara do Céu by four armed men.
