Ways to Eat Slim When Dining Out
TIPS
Tags: food, healthy, restaurant
We all know that the most tempting dishes at our favorite restaurants pack a mean punch in the calorie department. Here are a few suggestions on how to tailor your fat intake without sacrificing taste. Can anyone think of any more?
| | Order water as your drink. It is the most healthy option every time. It hydrates you without excess sugar, as pop and most juices have. Even diet pop can cause bloating due to the carbonation. | | | On sandwiches, substitute a bun or other bread for wheat bread. Whole grains are preferable. | | | Hold the mayonnaise- on everything, every time. This stuff packs about 100 calories per tablespoon, all of them from fat. | | | Salads are a great option; if done correctly, you can eat large portions without worrying about it. It is easy, however, to order an unhealthy salad. Steer clear of "club" salads, which usually have bacon in them. If chicken is a must have, make sure it's grilled and not breaded. Croutons are also a source of unnecessary carbs. When it comes to dressing, always order it on the side. If not, you're likely to get more dressing than lettuce! Stay away from creamy dressings, such as ranch, caesar and bleu cheese. A few healthy, and just as tasty, alternatives are honey mustard, any sort of vinaigrette, and of course, italian. Many restaurants also carry fat-free dressings, which can also be a good choice. | | | Go easy on the bread. Many restaurants bring bread out before the meal, and there's usually large quantities of butter with it. Bread is a necessary component in the daily diet- but don't binge on it just because you are still waiting for your meal to come. One or two small pieces should be just enough to prepare your palate for the main course. | | | If eating a burger, ask about turkey or soy substitutes. Turkey is a great way to cut calories and fat, and the burgers are just as delicious. Ask for a Boca Burger, a soy patty, for a meatless option. | | | Substitute fries for a vegetable. It might sound cruel to deprive yourself of America's favorite pasttime, but once you sink your teeth into a sweet potato or some steamed broccoli, you'll remember that eating right can be just as satisfying. | | | Most people wouldn't sacrifice cheese on their food, but there are ways to eat it without it nipping at your waistline. Hot pepper cheese, or pepper jack, is the lowest calorie cheese slice and it adds a great kick to your food. Mozzarella, Cheddar, Parmesan are all fine in moderation, but be wary of American cheese. Many times, what appears to be cheese on the menu is actually "cheese food", which adds unnecessary oil and fat. Also, steer clear of liquid cheese! It's positively awful for you. Plus, it's gross. | | | If dessert is a must, go for more fruit-based rather than chocolate, fudge or caramel based. |
