The Best Internet Lingo You're Not Using... Yet
BESTS
Tags: internet, internet slang, internet lingo, chat, blog, pop culture, computer, the web
Sound like the hippest, most web-savvy person around the water cooler when you drop one of these! These terms are embedded deep within the internet community, but they still deserve their place among greats such as LOL and BRB. Can anyone think of any more?
| | Godwin's Law (also known as Godwin's Rule of Nazi Analogies): The original law states: "As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches one." In actual usage, according to Internet culture, the party making the comparison involving Nazis is declared to have lost the original debate. (This is true, and can be proven by Avril Lavigne message boards.) |
| | BSOD (The Blue Screen of Death): an error screen displayed by certain operating systems, most notably Microsoft Windows, after encountering a critical system error. (Finally, a name to match the faceless villain.) |
| | BTDTGTTSAWIO: Been there, done that, got the t-shirt and wore it out. (The acronym may be a bit lengthy, but the message is as flawless as "your Mom!".) |
| | Troll: is someone who intentionally posts derogatory or otherwise inflammatory messages about sensitive topics in an established online community such as an online discussion forum to bait users into responding. (Again, I refer back to the Avril Lavigne message board, and yes, I am that troll!) |
| | KTHXBYE: a snobby form of goodbye, meant to express displeasure. |
| | Lurker: Someone who frequents a Usenet group without participating in discussions. (Can also be found at any given desk in any given college classroom.) |
| | NIFOC: Naked In Front Of Computer. (Sexual predators finally have their own language.) |
| | Tweedler: One who has deep love for all computer related technology and gadgets. (I think we all have a friend like this. If not, you probably are that friend.) |
| | fap fap fap: (A Farkism, www.fark.com) the sound created by a masturbating male, originating from the comic Sexy Losers. This often accompanies pictures or discussions of attractive women. (Oh dear). |
| | Gulog: A portmanteau of "gulag" and "blog". Used when a blog is so dismal and depressing, it's as if it were written in a Soviet labour camp. (Not quite Godwin's Rule, but it's close). |
