Is your dog digging up your garden like he's looking for buried treasure? Here's how to stop the rascal. Have any other tips? Post them here.

    		• Boredom. Take out away from the garden to exercise for at least one hour each day. Play games and allow him into the house. The more the dog is alone the more likely he is to dig. Leaving toys stuffed with food and goodies when he is left alone will make the "home alone" times more stimulating.

    		• Do not provide another dog to alleviate boredom. Far better to solve the first dog's digging problem before multiplying this by two.
  •  
    		• Fence Digging. He may smell something really interesting on the other side of the fence. Fill in any gaps in fencing but also watch for gaps below the fence - fill with concrete or attach chicken wire to the bottom.

    		• Try lifting some of the dog's own poo and placing that in the hole - few dogs will dig through their own feces.

    		• Still Digging. Provide a sandbox - or just a small corner of bare, dug over earth, and bury bones & toys. At first, leave part of the toy sticking out of the ground, take the dog over to the area, and act excited as if you are about to discover lost treasure. Let the dog get the toy and praise like mad. Whenever you see the dog digging in other parts of the garden, switch into your "excited - buried treasure" routine and encourage the dog over to the digging area.

    Sometimes a 2nd dog is what is needed but every life is a responsibility and most people are not prepared. 2 dogs can mean twice the digging, twice the diarrhea to clean, twice the emergency vet fees, twice the behaviorist fees if you can't solve digging or other problems on your own. And you might end up with dogs who bully each other, etc unless you get a 2nd dog that you AND the dogs are happy with, not just a dog you want. Don't make your dog live forever with a stranger after 1 blind date!
