BESTS

Interested in sitting through another Fourth of July "action thriller" with mediocre acting and a special effects budget that could cure poverty in Africa? Yeah, so am I. Here is a list of the most inventive, heart-warming films coming out this season.
| 1. | Across the Universe - This love story/movie musical is set almost entirely to covers of Beatles songs. Star-crossed lovers Lucy and Jude, as well as their fellow art students and musician friends, lose themselves in the anti-war counterculture of the 1960's. Like the psychedelic drugs of the 60's, the aesthetics of this film and mind-blowing and surreal. Imagine Uncle Sam popping out of his poster at you! This is sure to be a hit. The focal point of the film is the romance between street musician Glen and a Czech immigrant, whose story is revealed through their songs. This film has gotten amazing reviews so far. It hits American audiences on May 18th in limited theaters. The story focuses on a small-town waitress who learns she is pregnant, and must choose between a lousy marriage, or a risky affair with her doctor. Hilarious and heartwarming, this is no chick flick. Everyone can sympathize with Jenna's plunder, and have a laugh along the way. | | 4. | Live Free or Die Hard - Okay, I know I said summer blockbusters blow... but who DOESN'T want to see this? The ever-awesome Bruce Willis reprises his role as John McClane in the final installment of Die Hard. Who cares what the plot is about? We get to see Bruce blow things up, narrowly escape death and terrorists, and no doubt save the day. | | 5. | An American Crime - This gritty film is based on a the true story of housewife Gertrude Baniszewski, who tortures a beautiful teenager staying in her home. This film may not be fun or uplifting, but it's sure to leave a lasting impression. Critics are already giving rave reviews to Catherine Keener (Gertrude) and Ellen Page (the victim). This film is due in August 2007. View the trailer here: http://www.comingsoon.net/films.php?id=17063 |
