Whether your considering taking the hair dye plunge, or if you already have, this list of facts and de-bunked myths can help you make an informed decision.

	Despite what anyone tells you, dyeing your hair is NOT awful for your hair AS LONG AS you use the right products thereafter and only color every six to ten weeks. All dyes are low-ammonia, and some are ammonia-free, which is the main ingredient that could wreck your hair.
	Use a salon-brand color shampoo for as long as you color your hair- trust me, they are worth the extra buck. A $2 bottle of Suave will leave your hair crispy and drain the color very quickly. Use a thick conditioner daily, as well as a hair masque or deep condition every week or week and a half.
	Bleaching, however, is hair suicide. Instead of depositing color, bleach strips your hair of all color pigments, resulting in permenant damage. Only take the plunge if you are willing to deal with the repurcussions; even dyeing your hair post-bleach will look un-natural and flat.
	If you want to attain the platinum blonde of bleach without actually bleaching, talk with your stylist. A salon can get good results without the damage of bleach. If you prefer at-home dyes, you will have to lighten it in steps, depending on your natural hair color.
	Don't use any dye with the word "ash" in it- you'll end up with a grey-ish, unnatural tint.
	Be wary of reds. A red shade or undertone can be a lot of fun and look great, but they are also the most likely to fade AND the most stubborn at getting out. Once you are done being red, go to your stylist to move to your next shade. Otherwise the red will just keep showing up, no matter how many layers of at-home hair dye you put over it.
	Streaks and chunks are so out- more often than not, they look cheap and unnatural. Go for a subtle mix of highlights and lowlights- it will give your hair a shimmery depth. Or, simply let your natural highlights shine through!
	Based on experience and word of mouth, Feria by L'Oreal is the best at-home hair dye. They have a wide variety, and the color leaves your hair shiny and full of depth. Other good brands are Garnier Nutrisse and Herbal Essence.
	Don't fret too much over hair dye. The bottom line is: it's fun! Experiment with new hues and cuts, and you'll find you can have a lot of fun.
