BESTS
Tags: music, covers, songs, redone, singers, artists, best
Here are some of the best and most famous covers of songs originally sung by someone else. Whose version do you like better? Tell me in the comments section.
| | "All Along the Watchtower" - Original: Bob Dylan. Cover : Jimi Hendrix. Even Dylan adopted Hendrix's guitar-stoked arrangement in concert. |
| | "Take Me to the River" - Original: Al Green. Cover : Talking Heads. The Head's breakthrough song affirms their appreciation of R & B. |
| | "I Heard it Through the Grapevine" - Original: Gladys Knight and the Pips. Cover : Marvin Gaye. Gaye slows down the Pips' hit and plays up the paranoia. |
| | "Respect" - Original: Otis Redding. Cover : Aretha Franklin. The singer takes a great song and turns it into a feminist anthem. |
| | "Nothing Compares 2U" - Original: Prince. Cover : Sinead O'Connor. Coming off a devastating breakup, the Irish singer transforms the ballad into a catharsis. |
| | "Mystery Train" - Original: Junior Parker. Cover : Elvis Presley. The original is terrific, but Presley's doom-ridden reading is transcendent. |
| | "Money (That's What I Want)" - Original: Barrett Strong. Cover : Beatles. John Lennon's throat-tearing vocal is one for the ages. |
| | "Young Man Blues" - Original: Mose Allison. Cover : The Who. Wry piano jazz is transformed into heavy-metal teen angst. |
| | "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" - Original: Glen Campbell. Cover : Isaac Hayes. The epic reading of songwriter Jimmy Webb's classic put Hayes on the map as a solo artist. |
| | "Police on My Back - Original: The Equals. Cover : The Clash. he British punks reinvent yet another reggae song, originally written by Eddy Grant. |
| | "Tainted Love" - Original: Gloria Jones. Cover : Soft Cell. The Brit synth-pop duo transforms a '60s soul nugget into a signpost of the AIDs era. |
| | "Eight Miles High" - Original: The Byrds. Cover : Husker Du. The shattering assault pushes singer Bob Mould to the brink. |
| | "Hallelujah" - Original: Leonard Cohen. Cover : John Cale. Some people prefer Jeff Buckley's cover, but Cale's stripped-down piano-and-voice reading is the best. |
| | "In the Pines" - Original: Leadbelly. Cover : Nirvana. In an acoustic setting, this is Kurt Cobain's finest vocal performance. |
| | "There Stands the Glass" - Original: Webb Pierce. Cover : Ted Hawkins. The oft-covered country standard meets its match in Hawkins' gritty rendition. |
| | "Black Steel" - Original: Public Enemy. Cover : Tricky. This is a more personal, claustrophobic take on the militant rap classic. |
| | "The Mercy Seat" - Original: Nick Cave. Cover : Johnny Cash. Cash's reading of Nine Inch Nails' "Hurt" is amazing, but this Death Row narrative is even more riveting. |
| | "Jolene" - Original: Dolly Parton. Cover : White Stripes. Jack White claws at the desperation in this love-triangle narrative. |
| | "Oops, I Did It Again" - Original: Britney Spears. Cover : Richard Thompson. The British guitarist doesn't play the pop hit for laughs but amps up the dread. |

Personally I can't stand Aretha Franklin's "Respect". I've never heard Otis Redding's version, but I bet I'd like it better. Also, I had no idea someone was stupid enough to redo something by Britney Spears. Comment by: buccicone.2
