The Best Pop Culture Lingo You're Not Using... Yet

Terms you need to know to survive in the ever-evolving world of pop culture, the webosphere and white-collar America.
| | Bleg- Blend of Blog and beg; a blog that asks for help or money. |
| | Blurker- One who reads many blogs but leaves no evidence of himself such as comments behind. |
| | Cocabucks- Cocaine money, in the same sense that oil money has been called petrodollars. |
| | Flame Bait- An inflammatory posting intended to trigger a Flame War, or flurry of nasty replies, on a message board or blog. |
| | Flexitarian- A vegetarian who occasionally eats meat. |
| | Generica- Sea of fast-food joints, strip malls, and subdivisions. |
| | Growing a Beard- Restaurantese for food that has not been picked up from the serving line and is getting cold. |
| | Jobsworth- An low-ranking individual on the career hierarchy who abuses what little power they have. A jobsworth follows their job description to the letter, taking scrupulous pride in "the rules", even when they know they are flexible. |
| | Jumping The Shark- A metaphor to describe the turning point of a television show, marked by uncharacteristic and inconsistent plot twists, dramatically lessening the quality of the show. Said plot twists are usually absurd in nature and mark the beginning of the end. Shark jumps usually come in the form of birth, death, replacing the same character with a different actor, and singing. The term takes its name from a now infamous episode of 'Happy Days' in which Fonzie jumps over a shark while wearing water skis. |
| | Jumping The Couch- Similarly, this metaphor marks the point in which a celebrity has gone off the deep end, ruining his/her reputation. The term gets it's name from Tom Cruise's appearance on Oprah. |
| | PHB- Pointy Haired Boss. A term originally used in the strip cartoon 'Dilbert' to describe his incompetent boss. Although his boss physically possessed pointy, horned hair, the term "pointy haired" indicates a cripplingly stupid, yet still oddly powerful figure in white-collar environments. |
| | PHD- The academic strain, meaning Pointy Haired Dean. |
| | Porn Creep- The inconspicuously slow process by which sexually explicit content becomes acceptable to Western Culture. |
| | Shilling- The practice of Sellers either bidding up their own items, or using alternative registration to do so, on eBay or similar. |
