Can We Believe Anything President Bush Says About Iraq?
JUST THE FACTS
Tags: President, Bush, Iraq, War, Terror
With a new White House report just released stating that the Iraqi government has had moderate yet mixed results in fulfilling their military, economic and political objectives, and Bush's assertion that he views the war in Iraq is a "cause for optimism," can we believe anything Bush says on Iraq? Here is a list of reasons why we shouldn't.
| | Wrong about Weapons of Mass Destruction.- One of the President's biggest criticisms comes from his administration's assertion that Iraq had Weapons of Mass Destruction. Leading to the war, Bush and his supporters talked about mushroom clouds over U.S cities and the consequences of chemical weapons on a large population. The only problem was that Iraq possessed no Weapons of Mass Destruction. David Kay's report detailing the administration's mistake was the first big wake-up call to the American people. To be fair, many Democrats including former President Clinton strongly believed that Iraq possessed WMD's. |
| | Wrong about being greeted as liberators. This claim by the administration that U.S forces would be greeted as liberators turned out to be a red herring after Saddam's statue was toppled. The fact that U.S forces can't control large portions of the country because it is too dangerous makes Vice President Cheney's claim that we would be greeted as liberators on Meet the Press 4 years ago all the more ridiculous. |
| | Wrong about the cost of the war- Before the war started, Bush claimed that the cost of the war would be somewhere around $50 billion. Four years later and that number is now $1.2 trillion! Most Americans now would agree that the money spent on Iraq could have been better spent elsewhere, beefing up homeland security, health care, education, you name it and the results would probably have been better then Iraq. |
| | Wrong about the Iraq/9-11 link- The President and his supporters were very coy about a possible link between Saddam and and Al Qaeda. Even though there was never any evidence of the sort, the President and his supporters blurred the lines between fact and fiction regarding the worst attack on this nation's history. The 9-11 report set the record straight on this false claim. |
