Cult films are movies that were initially overlooked upon release but have subsequently gained a huge following. More recently, films can gain a cult following before release and make the movie very successful. Here is a list of the best cult films.

1. 300 (2007)-No one in Hollywood expected this little known action movie to become one of the biggest success stories of the year. In 2005, the movie began receiving a loud buzz on the internet from fans of the comic book. Gradually, the movie built up such a fan base on the internet that anticipation for the film reached gargantuan levels. The movie took Hollywood by surprise and along with Snakes on a Plane, an example of the new power of cult movies.
2. Scarface (1983)- People still can't believe that this film did terrible at the box office when it was released. Since then it has probably garnered one of the biggest cult following among the hip-hop community and college and high school students. The influence of the film can be seen everywhere, from rapper's names to video games to t-shirts. Scarface has become ten times more successful since it was initially released.
3. Blade Runner (1982)- This Ridley Scott film starring Harrison Ford was initially a flop when it was released in 1982. But subsequently it has gained a huge cult following and influenced the style and direction of many films including Minority Report and The Matrix.
4. Snakes on a Plane (2006)- Before 300 there was Snakes on a Plane. The premise and buzz around the film was all over the internet in 2005. Fans made t-shirts, songs and videos about a movie they hadn't even seen yet! Hollywood had seen nothing like this before. Not only did it affirm the power of the internet and it's new influence on film, but it changed the dichotomy of cult films. Now, cult films could build a following before the movie is released.
5. Donnie Darko (2001)- Richard Kelly's highly influential and stunning film found an audience after the film was released on DVD. Initially released the same week as the September 11th attacks, the film suffered poorly at the box office but developed a huge cult following on DVD. The movie's profound premise has found a place among many dissilusioned youth. Conventions are now bombarded with Donnie Darko fans and "Frank the Rabbit" is one of the most popular costumes among college students.
6. Dumb and Dumber (1994)-Probably the biggest disparity among generations on the list. Ask anyone 40 and over if they enjoyed the humor in the film and they will probably say no. The film gained a huge following among kids who watched the film in theaters or on video. Go to any High School in the country and you will probably hear lines from the film being recited.
7. Point Break (1991)- Widely considered to be the ultimate surfer movie, this Keanu Reeves/Patrick Swayze film has developed a cult following among college students, who remember the film as kids, and surfer fans. Often cited for it's many "Keanue lines," the film has had a place in current pop culture with spoofs in Family Guy,the movie Domino and the video game Grand Theft Auto.
8. The Monster Squad (1987)- "The Goonies with balls." That's how this film has been described by fans who have single-handedly made the film a true cult-film success story. Kids who grew up in the 80's appreciated the film so much that they petitioned online for the film to be released on DVD, which it was in 2007. Probably the most famous line of the film "Wolfman's got nards!" has been plastered on to t-shirts and sampled into dance tracks at popular clubs.
9. Say Anything (1989)- This love story was overlooked initially because it was released the same summer as the mega-hit "Batman." But since then college students and kids of the 80's have propelled the story of Lloyd Dobler and his quest for romance to cult status. The popular image of Dobler (played by John Cusak) holding up his boombox above his head outside of his girlfriends house has been parodied in many films and shows. Even the band Say Anything took their name from this popular film.
10. Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead (1991)- A favorite among generation y, DTMTBD has gained a huge cult following on the internet for it's wacky premise and 90's look and nostalgia. It has subsequently joined the ranks of one of those films you have to watch if it's on TV.

300 is a cult classic already? It's not widely supported, but I say Newsies is a cult classic. The proof is undeniable.

I agree Newsies should be on the list, it was the first movie I was forced to watch in music class that I actually liked. The songs are great too, who hasn't thought about breaking out into a rendition of "Santa Fe" every once in a while?

You are an idiot and clearly must be between the ages of 10 to 15, (unless you are in fact retarded (in which case please accept my apologies). By definition a cult classic is a movie which garners little to no commercial success but has a v.small group of highly devoted fans. Try any of these clown Harold and Maude Alice's Restaurant Rocky Horror Picture Show any David lynch Heathers Weird Science???? Chet... Shit!! any Cohen bros Evil Dead/2 Any John Waters
