Minneapolis Bridge Collapse
JUST THE FACTS
Tags: Minneapolis, bridge, collapse, news, concise, list, info, quick, facts
The steel-girder bridge linked downtown Minneapolis with northeastern suburbs. Stretching a little more than the length of three football fields, it was a popular route for commuters from downtown past the University of Minnesota and into the suburbs. Here are some facts about the bridge and the incident
| | Death toll: 5 people are dead, but the number is expected to rise |
| | Injuries: 70 people injured |
| | Missing: only 8 missing after there were 20-30 people unaccounted for the first day |
| | Construction: Started construction in 1964 and completed in 1967 |
| | Builders: Built by "Industrial Construction" |
| | Bridge Type: Steel Arch Truss - meaning it is supported from 2 arches below |
| | Activity: About 141,000 cars traveled across it every day |
| | Inspections: Undergone annual inspections since 1993 (prior, every 2 years). In 1990, it was classified as a "structurally deficient" bridge due to corrosions of the barrings. |
| | Structural Deficiency means: The deficiency rating is derived from a complex formula that evaluates many factors and condenses them into an overall score. A score of 80 percent or less indicates some rehabilitation may be needed; a 50 percent score or less indicates replacement may be in order. |
| | Recent: Since then, has some corrosion of steel and fatigued cracks (that were repaired). It was considered "fit for service" however. |
| | Studies: 2001 study by Univ. of Minnesota, Dr. Dexter identified fatigue in the bridge because some girders were distorted. Engineers also saw evidence of fatigue on the main truss and floor trusses and said the bridge might collapse. |
| | Dive teams: Cars are bring pinpointed with GPS but visibility in water is only about 6 feet. |
| | Witnesses: Many witnesses describe that the bridge started shaking and then there was a loud noise. One half of the bridge collapsed about 15 seconds before the other. |
