The Blades Residence was designed by Thom Mayne in Santa Barbara, California. Here is description of the design.

  • The Blades House was created by Thom Mayne, after his separation from longtime partner and co-creator of their firm Morphosis, in 1997 in Santa Barbara, California. As an observer it is extremely evident that Mayne loves to push his architectural design to an edge, and explore into areas others have not. To do so, he must have the confidence from his clients to allow him to do as he wishes. Richard and Vicki Blades allowed him to do just that.
  •
  • With the absence of Michael Rotondi in the design of the Blades House, only the relationship between contractor and client disappear; Rotondi’s open-ended buildings remained. Between this and Mayne’s artistic expression the separation between interior and exterior becomes blurred with walls crossing each other at perpendiculars and other obscure angles. Within these criss-crossing walls rooms are created.
  •
  • All of this design is set up by a curved wall in the middle of the building. This wall is a part of the home; it does not in any way create a datum or a separator. This wall helps to create Mayne’s desire - which was to lose the contemporary thought of the house being figure ground on the site which is seen as a void. In the Blades Residence, the work is seen as a whole site, the landscape and building combined as one into a habitable space altogether. The curved wall creates the livable landscape and the orthogonal walls create the idea of the home, the interior space, which relates to neighboring homes.
  •
  • The roof plays a large role in defining interior space. It is a long arched rooftop, at one end, the side nearest the street, a garage and a gallery can be found. In the middle the long curved wall is found. At the far side the living areas and bedroom are found.
  •
  • Overall, Blades Residence allows for a home to break away from some ordinary characteristics of a home and gesture more towards a landscape that works together with the interior space just as Mayne designed. The landscape becomes the dominant feature and the basis or the design in the habitation.
