So what's so great about Branford? Here are five places every Branford resident knows and loves, plus several great restaraunts in town.
| | Branford Point. Located near the center of town, this small, kid-friendly park features a sandy beach, a playground, and more than three acres of woods. There's also a hilltop memorial made of famous Stony Creek granite and several smaller beaches for kayakers and picnickers. Branford Point is on Long Island Sound. | | | Ashley's Ice Cream. Despite the encroachment of a new chain store down the street, Ashley's Ice Cream, located on the Branford Green, remains popular with residents and visitors alike. They make fresh ice cream every day and offer more than two dozen toppings. The store is named after a champion show dog, so dogs are welcome too! | | | Branford Green. If anything's happening around town, this is where it happens: the Branford Festival, Trinity Church Fair, craft fair, Family Day, and Branstock all happen here on various weekends. Even when there's nothing going on, its sunny lawn or the shade of stately maples is the perfect place to sit and eat that ice cream you just bought. | | | Branford River. Left relatively untouched because of eco-friendly local policy, our tidal river provides a wonderful place for kayakers, canoers, rowers and motorboaters alike. Several marinas bound the shore, but the river is still accessible to everyone. It reaches the Sound at Branford Point, so park your car there and make a day of it! | | | Supply Ponds. There are several beautiful open-space preserves in Branford, but the Supply Pond is the biggest and most well-known. Bring your kids and dog (and a plastic bag!) and have a fun hike on the spacious, carefully blazed trails. Or go down to the lake and check out the innovative fish ladder, built last year to provide native fish with an easy route to their historical breeding ground. Fishing and kayaking is also welcome. | | | Dar Bar. Also located on the Green, this authentic Indian restaurant is well-known for its great food and even better prices. Lunch is served as an all-you-can-eat buffet. Don't just limit yourself to Indian, though. Because we're so close to New Haven, we have almost a dozen restaurants and pizzerias featuring cuisine from around the world. More favorites inculde: | | | Assagio, a popular and tasteful Italian place located on Montewese Street. Be careful going for dinner though - it gets quite crowded. | | | Siam Orchids, a brightly-painted Thai gem on Branford Hill. Eat there, or get takeout. Its prices belie the tastiness of the food. | | | Honeyspot Pizza, a small pizza place that many swear makes better pizza than its New Haven cousins. | | | Pacileo's, another little pizza place on Harbor. They season their pizza a tad more than other restaurants, giving it a more savory, authentic flavor. They don't deliver, but the drive is worth it. | | | Salvadore's, one of the many one-or-two-table establishments that dot the town. They make a more traditional thin-crust pizza and crisp the edges just the way your mother did. |
