As of October 23, 2007:

	The wildfires killed two people and injured 38, including 12 firefighters.
	The fire situation in southern California remains critical where 12 uncontained large fires have burned more than 356,000 acres.
	Thousands of homes and commercial buildings throughout the area have been damaged or destroyed.
	More than 5,700 firefighters backed by helicopters, bulldozers and water-laden aircraft are battling 13 wildfires in seven counties, from San Diego north to Malibu, outside Los Angeles
	The Santa Ana winds continue to be a challenge as firefighters work to contain these blazes.
	Dry and windy conditions will continue in southern California through Wednesday.
	A strong Santa Ana wind event will continue to impact the southern California mountains, valleys and coastal areas through Wednesday, with strongest winds tapering off by Tuesday afternoon.
	President George W. Bush declared a state of emergency in California and dispatched Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff and Federal Emergency Management Agency Administrator David Paulison to San Diego.
	As of 8 A.M. on October 23, more than1,300 homes, 100 businesses and 80 other buildings, damaged another 400 structures and threatened 7,200 residences, 2,400 businesses and 450 other properties, according to the state fire protection agency.
	About 350,000 residents have left their homes, Schwarzenegger said in a CNBC interview.
	In San Diego, an estimated 250,000 people were evacuated, jamming roads and highways. Parts of two major freeways from the city, Interstates 15 and 5, were closed yesterday.
	The White House announced today that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) 'is authorized to identify, mobilize, and provide at its discretion, equipment and resources necessary to alleviate the impacts of the emergency' in southern California.
	Schwarzenegger ordered 1,500 California National Guard soldiers to be deployed to help firefighters, and was granted the use of military airborne fire-fighting craft.
	Several thousand personnel backed up by 316 fire engines, 19 air tankers, 15 bulldozers and eight helicopters battled the myriad infernos throughout the night.
	Twelve evacuation centers in San Diego house more than 12,000 people, said Tonya Hoover, a spokeswoman for the California Department of Forestry, including Qualcomm Stadium, home of the National Football League's San Diego Chargers franchise. The Chargers moved practices to Arizona for the next three days.
	Hewlett-Packard Co. yesterday evacuated employees from its printer-research facility, one of its largest.
	It is already estimated to be over $1.1 billion in damage.
	The gusting winds carried embers as far as 2 miles (3 kilometers) to kindle new fires.
	Temperatures may surpass 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32 Celsius) today. Some areas of Southern California have received little more than an inch (2 centimeters) of rain since Jan. 1.
