Things You Need if You Evacuate Your Home

Everyone always thinks to take their photo albums, but what haven't you thought of?

1.	Your identification. This includes your "everyday ID" such as driver license, and employment ID cards. But also your passport and birth certificates. If you keep your birth certificates in a bank safe deposit box, then...
2.	The key and location of your bank safe deposit box. This is where there should be a copy of your will (be sure someone else has a copy), your finest jewelry, and collectibles, and other valuables that you rarely use.
3.	A list of your bank accounts. This can be as simple as an index card with account numbers written on it, and a notation of the bank.
4.	A list of your insurance policies. Again, this can be as simple as an index card, along with the name and address and phone number of your primary insurance agent or carrier.
5.	Your checkbook and credit cards -- all of them. You want to take them because you don't know when you will be returning home, and you don't want to leave any of this behind in case your home is looted when you are away from it.
6.	Your last federal and state tax returns-- and at least the last federal tax return. No matter where you will call home next, your last tax returns are vital.
7.	Your current tax records and these can be as simple as an envelope with pay stubs, another envelope with tax deductible receipts, and a third envelope with miscellaneous receipts for medical expense, school expenses, job search expenses and other expenses you will need at the end of the year to file your taxes. Evacuation or not, you need these envelopes and should maintain them.
8.	Your home inventory. You inventory is your list of your clothes, furniture, appliances, decorations, and anything else of value that you will claim if there is a fire. You can compile your inventory the old fashioned way with a notebook, or the modern way by going room to room and closet to closet and drawer to drawer taking pictures with a video camera and describing what you see. A copy of your inventory should be in your bank safe deposit box or sent to a friend or relative in another city.
9.	Contact and mailing lists of friends and relatives. Do you have a small phone number book? Maybe you use the directory on your cell phone -- be sure you take it.
10.	Your home computer. So many of us have so much on our home computers -- mailing lists, account numbers, tax returns, you name it -- it's there. Take your computer. Unplug and stick it in the trunk of your car. Never mind the keyboard and monitor -- they can be replaced.
