Must-Reads -- Less Popular Works by Most Popular Authors
INFORMATIVE
Tags: literature, famous authors
Great literary figures may only be considered great because of one, break-through novel, but to have a piece recognized you need to have talent to back it up. While a great writer may only have a few highly recognized works, they've probably written many more that are just as beautiful. Here is a small list of some wonderful books/stories by acclaimed writers. While you might know the authors, you might not know these pieces.
| | "Dragon Seed" by Pearl S. Buck -- Mostly known for her novel "The Good Earth," Pearl Buck is an incredible writer with a story-telling ability that I treasure. There is depth and feeling in her work and in her characters that allow you to experience her story instead of just reading it. | | | "Brighton Rock" by Graham Greene -- "The Power and the Glory" is his most famous work, but Greene's earlier novel "Brighton Rock" is a must-read because of its masterful representation of the shifting of power. I find it very emotional to see the progression of events and how they affect the main character's livelihood, spirit and influence. | | | "The Fisherman and His Soul" by Oscar Wilde -- This is a short story; part of a collection of fairy tales written for his sons. He is mostly known for his plays and novels, (and for his wit), but "The Fisherman and His Soul" is none of these things. Instead, I think it is an artistically descriptive lesson in what is Good. | | | "The Elderbush" by Hans Christian Andersen -- Another short story by a legend in fables and tales. So many of his stories are familiar to us all, in one form or another: "The Little Mermaid," "The Ugly Duckling," "The Emperor's New Clothes," and more. I don't believe "The Elderbush" is as widely publicized, but for me there is no truer representation of what a story really is or how it comes to be. | | | "The Arabian Nights" unknown -- While I'm on the subject of these well-known stories... So you've seen Disney's Aladdin? It's time to take the next step. You'll need a very fine translation, true to the original sensuality of the 1,001 tales, and you can experience passion, danger, magic, murder and a rich history and tradition, exotic by nature. These stories are a must-read in their original, sultry splendor. |
