Great New Books For Holiday Gift Giving
INFORMATIVE
Tags: books, holidays, christmas, hanukkah, gifts
I'm a bookseller, and every year I'm asked what my favorite new books are for holiday gift giving. Here they are!
| | Blonde Faith, Walter Mosely. From the author of "Devil in a Blue Dress," comes his latest crime drama. The tenth in Mosley's series starring Los Angeles detective Easy Rawlings, it will be a sure hit for the mystery lover in your family. |
| | Principles of Uncertainty, Maira Kalman. Fabulous artist and children's book author/illustrator Kalman has finally created a book for adults. Designed to look like a standard novel/memoir from the outside, it opens up to reveal page upon page of fully illustrated, hand written musings my the artist. A true "picture book" for adults,it's also a gripping read -- your artsy friend or poetess aunt will love this one. |
| | The Nine, Jeffrey Toobin. Author and New Yorker editor Toobin takes on the highest court in the land with a well-researched tome on the current Supreme Court. Chock full of insider information and high-fallutin' gossip, this one's for Dad, Gramps, or your kid's headmistress. |
| | Anything by Doris Lessing or Norman Mailer. Grande Dame Lessing just won the Nobel Prize for Liturature in honor of her staggering body of work, covering almost every genre -- from fiction to poetry to essays to sci-fi. Mr. Mailer, after decades of successfully carrying the he-man torch for Hemingway (and covering almost as much territory as Lessing), passed away earlier this month. His writing is to Lessing's as salt is to pepper -- both are strong, opinionated and necessary -- but they're writing from completely different places. How about a paperback of each to your favorite college student or aspiring writer? |
| | The Dangerous Book for Boys/The Daring Book for Girls. This pair of oversized hardcover "reference" books for kids uses a nostalgic formula and clever writing to entrance and entertain the young ones by teaching them important life skills -- like making sailor knots, knowing the rules of poker, and dozens of other cool things we wished we knew as kids. Don't fret the segregation of the sexes, it's all part of the fun. I've yet to see a child who didn't love these books -- and the parents adore them, too. (A great family gift.) |
