Period bathrooms can be a unique feature in period homes. But don't get overwhelmed by history. You need to approach the restoration project pragmatically.
| | Find a good plumber - old bathrooms can be tricky and a trustworthy plumber is essential |
| | Be pragmatic about authenticity - using bathroom antiques feel good, but some items, eg faucets, can be more trouble than they are worth to restore |
| | Old baths are good candidates for restoration - traditional clawfoot tubs can be safely re-enamelled |
| | If you do choose to use antique faucets, showers etc, be aware that you may need to change the plumbing as old bathroom items may not be able to cope with modern water pressure |
| | Traditional water supply from header tanks in the roof is a green way to bring water to the house - these systems typically use less power |
| | Wooden floors in bathrooms are traditional and more practical than they seem |
| | Don't use plastic pipework - it will really spoil the effect |
