Most Under-Rated, Classic PC Horror Video Games Ever
BESTS

The next time you get tired of playing the latest installment of Silent Hill or Resident Evil, take a step back in time to explore these great, classic titles that many people have never heard of. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
| 1. | Realms of The Haunting (1997 Interplay) -- While the graphics may look very pixilated by today's standards, the game play is so well thought out and the worlds so well crafted that you will find yourself completely immersed in the story playing out before you. It also seamlessly melds the cognitive challenges of an adventure game (puzzle solving, exploration, etc) with the action and intensity of a first person shooter. With over 40 hours of game-play spanning 4 CD-Roms, you will explore a creepy, sprawling mansion with various portals leading off into other dimensions. Initially there to investigate the mysterious circumstances surrounding your father's death, you eventually learn that you are -- in fact -- an integral force in determining the final outcome of Armageddon. | | 2. | Nocturne (1999 -- Terminal Reality) Nocturne is a survival horror game set sometime around the 1930s in which you play the character of The Stranger. The Stranger works for a secret organization created by Theodore Roosevelt to fight monsters such as zombies and vampires. Among these and other monsters, you will also encounter voodoo rituals and Al Capone-style mobsters. This game can be extremely challenging at times and always fun. | | 3. | Shivers (1995 -- Sierra On-line) This one is a classic, Myst-style point and click adventure. On a dare from your friends, you sneak into the long abandoned and aptly named Professor Windlenot's Museum of the Strange and Unusual. The museum has sat empty for 15 years since the disappearance of the good Professor. Once you make your way inside, you discover four elemental forces, called Ixupi, have broken free of their imprisoning vessels and run amok. The puzzles in this game are very challenging and a few downright frustrating. The game also boasts a few moments that will make you jump and one of the most awesome soundtracks I have heard in a game. | | 4. | Shivers 2: Harvest of Souls (1997 Sierra On-line) The only things this game has in common with the original Shivers is the name, challenging puzzles, and another great soundtrack. In this second, and final installment, of the series you play a member of the rock band Trip Cyclone who must rescue his fellow bandmates from the forces of evil which plague the town. This is yet another title that will completely suck you into its world. | | 5. | Amber: Journeys Beyond (1996 -- Hugh Forest Entertainment) In this game you find yourself in a house with various pieces of equipment for investigating paranormal phenomena. First you must figure out how to use these devices and then you can start to explore the mysteries of the three spirits who haunt the grounds. Another point and click adventure game but, again, an extremely well made one. |
